    ABOUT THIS PRINT

This print should be viewed alongside William Hogarth’s depiction of the execution of Tom Idle. Like that illustration, this one comes from Hogarth’s 1747 series Industry and Idleness. While Idle’s story provides a warning, the subject of this print – Francis Goodchild – provides an inspiration. Goodchild and Idle both start out as humble apprentices at a silk weaver’s shop in Spitalfields. While Idle’s behaviour brings him misery, Goodchild’s diligence and virtue bring reward. We can see the culmination of Goodchild’s triumphant story here. The scene is one that would have been familiar to Georgian Britons – the glitzy civic parade. Goodchild has just become the Lord Mayor of London. – Peter Moore
